Where Should You Place NFC Cards? A Business Placement Guide

A practical placement guide for deciding where customers should encounter NFC cards, stands and stickers.

Where you place an NFC card can matter more than what is programmed onto it. The best NFC touchpoint appears at the moment a customer already wants to take the action behind the tap.

A review card hidden behind a till will underperform. A WhatsApp card at the exact place customers ask for support can be genuinely useful.

Start with the customer moment

Ask two questions:

  1. What does the customer want to do here?
  2. Is tapping easier than the current method?

If the answer is unclear, the NFC card probably does not belong there.

Good review-card placements

Reviews work best after the customer has experienced the service. Useful locations include checkout desks, service handover points, reception and bill presenters.

Good WhatsApp-card placements

Place WhatsApp cards where customers need an enquiry or support route: reception, consultation desks, showrooms, property viewings and service counters.

Good menu-card placements

For restaurants and hospitality, a menu card can sit in a bill folder, host stand or staff service area. If customers need to discover the menu without staff, a display stand or table sticker may be stronger.

Good business-card placements

A reusable NFC business card usually stays with the person rather than a location. Keep it in a wallet, card holder, meeting bag or reception desk where it is easy to present during a conversation.

Avoid metal interference

Standard NFC products can perform poorly when placed directly against metal. If you need NFC on metal, use a product designed for that environment or create separation between the NFC tag and the metal surface.

Make the tap point reachable

Do not place a card behind glass, too high on a wall or where the customer has to lean awkwardly across a counter. NFC works at close range, so the phone needs to get physically near the tag.

Use clear wording

A customer should know what happens before tapping. Good calls to action include:

  • Tap to Review
  • Tap for WhatsApp
  • Tap for Menu
  • Tap for WiFi
  • Tap for My Details

Card vs stand vs sticker

Use a card when the interaction is portable or staff-led. Use a display stand where the touchpoint should be obvious at a counter or table. Use a sticker where the NFC point can remain on a suitable non-metal surface and space is limited.

Test the exact location

Do not test the NFC card in your hand and assume it will work identically after installation. Test it in the exact position where customers will use it, including nearby metal, glass, counters and cases.

Observe real customers

After launch, watch whether customers notice the tap point without help. If staff have to explain it every time, change the wording or position. Small placement changes can have a bigger effect than changing the technology.
