Do NFC Cards Work on iPhone? What Businesses Need to Know
A simple guide to iPhone NFC card compatibility, tap behaviour and troubleshooting for businesses.
Do NFC cards work on iPhone? Yes, most modern iPhones can read NFC tags and cards. For a business, the important part is understanding how the customer should tap and what can interfere with the interaction.
You should still test your exact NFC card and destination before using it with customers, because phone cases, settings and card placement can affect the experience.
How an iPhone reads an NFC card
The NFC card contains a passive chip. When the iPhone comes close to the NFC area, the phone can detect the stored record and present the relevant prompt or action.
The NFC card itself does not need a battery or Bluetooth connection.
Where should the customer hold the iPhone?
On many iPhones, the NFC antenna is near the upper part of the device. In practice, it is usually better to bring the top of the phone close to the marked NFC area rather than pressing the centre of the phone flat against the card.
There is no need to tap hard. NFC works at very short range.
Does the customer need an NFC app?
For a normal Tapzy customer interaction, no Tapzy app is required. The iPhone handles the reading behaviour and opens the destination associated with the NFC card.
Apps are more relevant when you are writing or managing NFC tags yourself.
Why might the tap not work?
Common causes include:
- holding the wrong part of the phone near the card;
- a very thick case;
- a metal case, accessory or surface interfering with NFC;
- moving the phone away too quickly;
- placing the NFC card directly against metal;
- a damaged or incorrectly programmed NFC tag.
What about older iPhones?
NFC capability has expanded over different iPhone generations, so older models may behave differently from newer phones. If your customers use a wide mix of devices, a visible secondary route such as a printed URL or QR code can be useful as a fallback.
Does NFC use mobile data?
The NFC read itself does not require mobile data, but if the card opens a webpage, WhatsApp conversation, Google Review page or other online destination, the phone needs an internet connection to load that destination.
Should businesses test Android too?
Yes. A customer-facing NFC card should ideally be tested on both iPhone and Android. Some Android devices may require NFC to be enabled in settings. The location of the NFC antenna also varies by phone.
Keep the customer instruction simple
Use wording such as “Tap your phone here” or “Tap to review”. Staff should know where the NFC chip sits in the product so they can demonstrate it quickly.
Choose the right NFC card
Tapzy programs and tests NFC products before dispatch when setup is included, helping reduce avoidable setup problems. Browse NFC cards in South Africa, or learn more in What Is NFC and How Does It Work?.
